History of NSS

A Brief History Of The College.

N.S.S College was founded by Swami Vishadnanda, President of Sree Ramakrishna Ashram, Palappuram and was formally inaugurated by Mrs. Prabhakaran Thampan on 10th July1961. In July1962 it was upgraded and shifted to the present site . The premises of the college consists mostly of donations from Smt. K.P.S. Menon and Sri. Vapala Sankaranrayanan Menon .

There have been others too who must indeed be remembered with gratitude . At present this institution is a full fledged Grade 1 college with almost all subjects taught at the P.D.G. and Graduate level and with 5 Post-Graduate courses.

About Ottapalam

Ottapalam (Malayalam: ഒറ്റപ്പാലം) is a socio-culturally significant town in Palakkad of Kerala in south India. Situated on the banks of the Bharathapuzha (also called the Nila), it has a rich cultural heritage and has played host to many historic events. Headquarters of the taluk by the same name, it is one of the municipalities of the district. It used to be a major town of the erstwhile Valluvanad, during the reign of the Zamorins of Calicut. The principal spoken language is Malayalam. It is also known for Kalluvazhi chitta, one of the most evolved styles in Kathakali, originated in and around Ottapalam. Pariyanampatta temple, Kattukulam, also known as Valluvanad's Mookambika Temple is situated in Ottapalam

Renowned personalities

K.R. Narayanan, India's first President from the Dalit community, represented the Ottapalam Lok Sabha constituency for three terms -- 1984, 1989 and 1991.
K.P.S. Menon, Independent India's first Foreign Secretary, was born in Ottapalam. He also served pre-Independence India as an Agent-General to China.
Shiv Shankar Menon, the present Foreign Secretary, also hails from the town.
Dr. Mambullikalathil Govindakumara Menon, the former Union Minister and Scientific Adviser to former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi, is from Ottapalam.
M.K. Narayanan, the former chief of the Intelligence Bureau and present National Security Adviser, hails from Ottapalam.
Sankaran Nair, the former Intelligence Bureau Director and head for the committee of Asiad 1982, is from Ottapalam.
Bhaskar Menon, the first Indian to head a multinational corporation, comes from this place. He was the chairman of Lever Brothers in England (Now Unilever).
Vidya Balan, the Bollywood actor, was born in Ottapalam.
Kalluvazhi Vasu and Kalamandalam Ramadas, both famous
Kathakali artistes, are from Ottapalam. Shri I C P Namboodiri, who was a cultural and political reformer is from Chalavara Panchat, which is a part of Ottapalam Constituency. His home was the centre for various revolutionary happenings in the middle and end of 20th Century.

Places of Importance

Kerala Kalamandalam About 8 kms away from Ottapalam is the famous Kerala Kalamandalam. Founded in 1930 by renowned poet Padmabhooshan Vallathol Narayana Menon along the banks of the river Nila in the Cheruthuruthy village of Thrissur District, Kalamandalam is an immortal name in the cultural map of the world. Kalamandalam has a unique place in cultural Kerala. There were so many eminent personalities provided a face to this great institution. They are those legenday Kalamandalam Krishnan Nair, Guru Kunchukkurup, Pattikkamthodi Ravunni Menon, Thiruvillamala Venkicha Swamy for Maddhalam, Thottasserry Chinnammu Ammu, famous for Mohiniattam, Painkulam Rama Chakyar for Koodiyattam, Kalamandalam Krishnan Kutty Poduwal for Kathakali, Kalamandalam Neelakantan Nambisan, etc. It is an endless list.

Killikkurussimangalam, near Lakkidi, is the birthplace of Kunchan Nambiar, Kerala's famous poet and father of the traditional solo dance, Ottamthullal. It is 8 km away from Ottapalam. Late Koodiyattam guru Padma Shri Mani Madhava Chakyar also hails from Killikkurussimangalam.

Gandhi Seva Sadan, or Sadanam Kathakali and Classical Arts Academy, is situated near Pathirippala, some 12 km east of Ottapalam.

Recently, Ottapalam, particularly
Manissery, has become a popular shooting spot for Malayalam and Tamil movies.

Chalavara Panchayat was know as the "MOSCOW' of Valluvanadu, because so many communist leaders are from chalavara including P V Kunjunni Nair, I C P Namboodiri, I S Namboodiri, A P Ravunni nair,M P Kunju, A Narayana Menon, K V Raman Kutty etc.During the freedom struggle, Chavalara was the main hideout of all freedom fighters and Communist leaders.


Vaniamkulam Chantha Take the bus from Ottapalam towards Shornur and on the way you will see Vaniamkulam ‘chanda’. Chanda which means market in Malayalam, is a famous Thursday market. People from far and wide do come in to this market with their goodies, including cattle
